The very first step in any CI pipeline is checking out the code. The pipeline runner starts as a blank VM — it has no source code until you explicitly fetch it. In GitHub Actions this is `actions/checkout@v4`. It clones the repo at the exact commit SHA that triggered the pipeline, so you're always building the right version.
